Biography Frederick Banting is considered the discoverer of insulin, together with the student Charles Herbert Best. Their work during the summer of 1921 enabled the rapid preparation of purified insulin for the treatment of diabetes, thanks to the work of chemist James Collip, under the direction of John James Richard McLeod, all at the University of Toronto.
